Tutorial Eight: Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology

Cook and Hussey (1995) define "Assistive Technology is any item piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customised that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities". Through this i have developed the understanding that assistive technology is the use of equitment or a particular product that an indvidual can use to assist and enhance their occupational performance.

One piece of assistive technology that was introduced in the assistive technology tutorial by Dave the (OT) was a smart board. The SMART Board interactive whiteboard is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for user input – e.g., scrolling, right mouse-click – in the same way normal PC input devices, such as a mouse or keyboard, detect input. A projector is used to display a computer’s video output on the interactive whiteboard, which then acts as a large touch screen. The SMART Board typically comes with 4 digital pens, which use digital ink and replace traditional whiteboard markers.

Smart boards come in a verious range of sizes and your average smart board is around 65 1/4" W × 49 1/2" H × 5 1/8" D (165.7 cm × 125.7 cm × 13 cm) and range largly in cost how ever they are not cheep.

the benfits and uses of smart boards can been seen in the two videos below.

The video below also covers how the smart board increases occupational capacity for users.

- engages individuals in unique ways

- uses touch recognition

- reduce in tools that need to be used

- accessible for all people

- additional options for others

- interactivity

- simple

- more involved
