Tutorial Two: Digital Imaging

The focus of this second blog is to develop an understanding of image capturing, storage and distribution of digital still images.

Some of the Hardware and Software that i am familiar with:

There are many different software's and hardware's that I have become familar with these consist of:
  • Photoshop
  • Mouse
  • Keyboard
  • DVD
  • Ant-virus programmes
  •  Microsoft office programmes
  • Hardrives
  • Usb's
  • Games
  • Internet explorer
Examples of the use of digital imaging to provide information and recording:

there are a number of things that use digital imaging to provide information and recording intodays day and age. Three of the most common are digital camaras, webcams and video camaras

Webcams are a form of digital camera that capable of downloading images to a computer for transmission over the Internet or other network. Today webcams are used to produce such things as live recordings via the internet a good example of this is the Internet programme knowen as skype, Web cams can also be used to capture pictures whilst sitting at a computer, and for quick uploads of photos. Most laptops these days come with built in webcams however they can also be brought indvidualy.

Digital Camaras:

A Digital camera is a portable device that produces digital images located anywhere and uploaded to a computer at a later date, Almost all the digital cameras that are currently being used can record sounds, moving videos and still photos at the same time. It may be a common and popular gadget nowadays but it has not been always like this.

Video Camaras:
A video camara is a portable, hand-held camera resembling a movie camera but recording on videocassettes or DVD's for playback on a TV or a computer. Depending on the memory that is on the camara will determind the length of video that can be recorded.

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature".

Ethical issues. Digital imaging as effective as it is brings with it a large number of ethical issues. The biggest ethical issue is around Privacy. Privacy needs to be considered when taking a photo. Consent should be gained by individuals involved in the image before both taking, and keeping a photo.  Copyright is another factor to consider; consent is required when the photo has been taken by someone else, as they own this photo and consent may have only be granted to them to use it.
Ways digital images could be used/ are being used in OT practice?

In Occupational therapy practice photos are being used to pur faces to names and alos help clients to remeber past experiences that they have partaken in. Housing modifications.

more ways inwhich they can be used are

  • Recording clients while they are doing certain occupations.
  • Equipment- to show the clients what it looks like.
  • Manuals with pictures- also to show clients different types of equipment.
  • Provide visual aid on equitment use for clients.

This statement relates to digital camera technology as new cameras take more pictures and have more editing features however they have begin to lose value as more unnecessary photos unlike old times when you only had a small limit on the number of photos that could be taken. This therefore meant that the few photos that were taken were more meaningful. New technologies also create less meaning as there is not so much time and effort put into processing the images. Also these days it is alot easier to lose all photos such as if a camera is lost or a laptop broken. Many photos into day’s world also become unnamed and dated making it hard to identify in the future.
